With the news that Hertz is about to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , dumping lots of cars into an already hurting used car market, prices of used cars are about to sink even lower. What would be the most likely car, truck, or SUV that would make you seriously consider changing vehicles?
I doubt there will be much change to the overheated 4x4 pickup truck market, although I’m sure Hertz had a few of those in their fleet. So I’m going to cross that off my list. Of everything else though, there is one that has given me ideas.
Back in October before all this COVID-19 bullshit, we took a short vacation up to Seattle and I rented a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! from Hertz-affiliated Thrifty . Yes, I know it was a *gasp* automatic, but that was the most fun I’d had behind the wheel in a long damn time. It made awesome noises and I got to scare the hell out of my husband a bunch . Really the only thing I didn’t like was the color. If a bunch of these (or also R/T Chargers) become available and the prices get low enough, I’ll definitely have trouble hanging on to my original plan to keep my truck for a couple years. Because of my recent dedication to consolidating debts, saving money, and paying things off, my credit score has skyrocketed. I can get dat LOW LOW LOW interest, yo. Hell, I would even consider a white one.
So, what would tempt you?

You’re gonna think this is weird, but here goes. I’d want to try the latest gen Impala. See, I liked that car from the moment it came out, and even more when I sat in one a few times. So many times when I would rent from Hertz, I would cross my fingers that it would be one of those, but I would always get the last gen, which stayed in production specifically for fleet sales. I think the reason I never got one of the new ones was because it wasn’t as easy to install the hand controls on them.
So if someone showed me to a lot and said “pick”, I don’t know as I’d end up putting down money and driving off the lot with one, but it would be my first stop.

Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, mustang 4 cy or v6 if they still make those. I imagine many of these cars will go to auction and end up on dealers lots.

Maybe something with very low miles that was bought just before the crisis and was never hooned. A lot of their Euro stuff tends to be fairly basic.
I had a Scat Pack for a rental from ORD, fun in its own way, sounded good, turned the heads of 15 year olds and 65 year olds alike:

Well, considering that I nearly bought one of the generation before it (willingly) , I don’t have any right to judge what’s weird.

Used Optimas are already cheaper than I expected. I’d get another one in a heartbeat.

My dad loved his rental Impala in 2018. An influencing factor for getting his Canyon (trying GM).

I can’t remember exactly how many miles were on mine, but I think it was around 20k and it didn’t seem abused or anything. It was pretty clean inside.

2018 + Durango R/T or Pacifica limited. They probably have a bunch of those.

Sometimes I want to be more afraid of the things I can’t see, especially if the car had miles on Detroit quality streets (Chicago wasn’t as bad). I think mine was around 10K - free upgrade, won’t complain about that.
For a normal car, the risk is probably minimal. If someone buys a Hertz Camry with 20K on it, it’ll probably be fine.

I’m willing to compromise on a stick shift for a classic Jeep, but they weren’t renting out a lot of Grand Wagoneers, so...

I’ve rented a bunch of cars over the last two years. My favorites were the Challengers and the F-150s. I’d choose, in order, F-150, Challenger, Explorer , or Edge.

I'd get a V8 Charger or Challenger. I got a bright yellow one as a rental from enterprise last summer. I really missed the exhaust note that car made. Every so often I look at prices for a 2017 hoping to find one in Green Go.

I’d definitely add an F-150 to my list, but I don’t know how many they have now in their fleet. Trucks have been holding their value too well.
Fun fact, when I worked for Hertz it was at the airport so there were rarely any pickup trucks in the fleet . They would show up from time to time though, and if I saw one in the inventory at the start of my shift it would be my goal to upsell it to a customer. Male customer by himself with a Texas driver license? SOLD. Every time.

4 c ylinder mustang to 6 speed swap and go full Euro. Least desirable means cheap and I like the looks.
V8 charger to road trip.
10 versas for a per unit discount at the upper limit of miles before being dropped from the fleet and televising a banger race. Maybe partner with the freedom factory and put them against a team of crown vics.

So i’ve gotten the new Impalas from Hertz a couple of times...The 2019 model was quite good, decent engine, decent gearbox, and the best handling out of all the full sized rentals ive driven.
However, I have also gotten 2018 and previous MY ones and the gearbox tuning on that is utter garbage. IDK if they were maintained incorrectly or if the ECU had ‘learned’ to drive from a grandpa but it would not redline in any gear and was very hesistance to downshift...

What was the equipment level on those? Hertz likes to go base on the models, but I kinda remember the cabins on those were pretty well equipped even in rental spec? Also, I assume your cars had the 4 cylinder and not the 6.

Yeah, the cabins were well equipped, apple car play, Android auto, cooled heated seats iirc. No radar cruise or any other driver aids tho, not that I would’ve used them but still...
I've only had the 4 cyl for the new ones. A couple of last gen V6 tho, man that was a hot rod! Lots of go, floppy handling and weak brakes. Very difficult to maintain highway speeds, I would always drift above them!

You, exceeding the recommended maximums posted by the commonwealth? I’m shocked, shocked I tell you!
Well, not that shocked.
In something as big and comfortable as that, it’s always so easy to creep up the speedometer without noticing.
